• CMIT and TCTT are two adjacent terminals in the Cai Mep deep-water port cluster, both with many similarities in berth infrastructure. These advantages facilitate the connection and establishment of a common berth between the two terminals, enabling CMIT and TCTT to accommodate three mainliners simultaneously.
  • The proposal for cooperation to establish a common berth between the two terminals has been endorsed by various authorities, including the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vung Tau Port Authority, General Department of Customs, Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial Customs Department and Cai Mep Customs.
  • CMIT and TCTT signed Memorandum of Understanding for the cooperation to establish a common berth.
  • The cooperation to establish a common berth between CMIT and TCTT will extend the quay length and ensure seamless cargo connectivity, thereby supporting the development of Cai Mep – Thi Vai into an international transshipment hub

On May 24, 2024, Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) and Tan Cang Cai Mep - Thi Vai Terminal (TCTT) jointly held a Ceremony to open the internal gate connecting CMIT-TCTT. The event was attended by Mr. Nguyen Van Tho - Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, Mr. Mai Ngoc Thuan – Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Council of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, Mr. Le Ngoc Khanh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, representatives from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Customs Department, Vung Tau Port Authority, Cai Mep Port Customs, local authorities, departments, and agencies, shareholders, partners, and staff of both terminals.

CMIT and TCTT are two adjacent terminals with many similarities in berth infrastructure, enabling the connection and establishment of a continuous 1,200-meter berth capable of simultaneously accommodating three mainliner vessels.

"The cooperation between the two terminals marks a groundbreaking new model of port cooperation, opening up numerous opportunities and development potential for port operations in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area. It also optimizes added value for customers and shipping lines, ensures service quality, and helps the terminals fulfill commitments to shipping lines, thereby enhancing the reputation, capacity, and service quality of Vietnamese seaports in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area," said Mr. Vu Hong Hung, Director of TCTT.

In response to the proposal from the two terminals, the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration issued a document approving in principle to allow CMIT and TCTT to jointly study establishment of a common berth between the two terminals. This cooperation also received support from the General Department of Customs, the Customs Department of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, and the Cai Mep Customs, allowing cargo to be transported between the two terminals through an internal gate.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, General Director of CMIT, shared, "The strong support from maritime authorities and customs authorities at all levels, as well as the endorsement of provincial leaders, is a crucial foundation not only for the two terminals to implement the next steps in studying the establishment of a common berth to enhance port operation efficiency, but also to further develop Cai Mep into the largest international transshipment port in the country and a significant player in Asia and the world, as outlined in Resolution No. 24-NQ/TW of the Politburo."

In the presence of provincial leaders from Ba Ria - Vung Tau, relevant authorities, and shareholders of both terminals, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, General Director of CMIT, and Mr. Vu Hong Hung, Director of TCTT, jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in establishing a common berth. This is a significant precursor for both terminals to further enhance their comprehensive cooperation to new heights.

In the first four months of 2024, the throughput via Cai Mep port generally showed a robust growth of 37% compared to the same period last year. Specifically, the vessel volume handled through TCTT saw a growth rate of 26%, while CMIT experienced a growth of 54%. Weekly, the two terminals receive 14 international vessel calls, with 8 calls at TCTT and 6 calls at CMIT. Particularly, one of the world's top 9 shipping lines has chosen Cai Mep as a transshipment port in the region, deploying all 5 services at both CMIT and TCTT. The cooperation between the two terminals in terms of berth connection is highlighted as a significant advantage influencing the shipping line's decision.
